A Candlelight Miracle

It was 1938 in Germany. Abby waited by the menorah. It was the last night of Hanukkah. Soon it would be dark and Abby and her mother would light the candles.

Abby couldn’t wait!

But then her mom came running into the room with a suitcase. “Abby, we need to get going,” her mom said.

“Where?” Abby asked. “What about the last night of Hanukkah?”

“It will have to wait,” her mother said. She put the candles into her pocket.

They left the house and walked down the street. Abby saw their family’s shop. There was a “sold” sign in the window.

“What happened to our shop?” Abby asked.

“We had to sell it,” her mother said.

“But we just got all the windows fixed!” Abby said.

A month before, a group of angry people had broken all the windows. Many shops owned by other Jewish families were also ruined.
