How the Kangaroo Got Her Pouch

“Stay close!” Sue Kangaroo yelled to her son, Jeffrey. They were headed to the Darling River to swim.

Sue had her hands full. She carried towels, a beach ball, and a picnic for lunch.

Jeffrey leaped through the tall green grass. He raced into the water. Sue tried to keep up but tripped over a grumpy old wombat.

“Watch where you’re going!” the wombat huffed.

“I’m sorry,” said Sue. “I didn’t see you. Are you okay?”

The wombat dusted himself off.

“I’m fine,” he said, “but I’m tired and thirsty. Can you help me reach the river?”

“I’ll take you to the water,” she said. “Hang on.”

She scooped up her things, put the wombat on her back, and hopped to the river.
