Miss Applebottom

Miss Applebottom is known for many things. She is known for her red hair, her red cheeks, and her red sweater.

And, of course, everyone knows that she LOVES apples!

“There is nothing more delish,
than a Braeburn or a Honey Crisp!”

Now, each of Miss Applebottom’s students wanted to be her favorite. So each day every student brought her a tasty apple.

At first Miss Applebottom lined up the apples in a row.

“Line them up all in a row.
Apples are the best, you know!”

Soon the apples covered her entire desk. So the students piled them into the coat closet. Then the students piled them on the floor.

“Put them in a great big pile.
I’ll eat them up with a great big smile!”

Miss Applebottom stacked the piles, one on top of the other. The stacks of apples grew and grew. They grew until the students could not even enter their classroom!

“This pile of apples just grew and grew.
But I know exactly what to do!”

“We’ll make my favorite: apple pie!
They’ll be enough for us all to try!

We’ll make apple cider, juice, and punch.
We’ll have sliced apples with our lunch.

We’ll eat these apples one by one.
We’ll eat these apples until the day is done!”

Each student carried as many apples as they could. They filled their pockets and backpacks. Miss Applebottom even balanced some on her head.

“Come along class and you will see
just how tasty these apples can be.”

The class followed Miss Applebottom into the school cafeteria. The class organized all of the apples into groups.

“The green ones will go here. We’ll put the red ones over there.
Ryan, stack the goldens under the window on that chair.”

Miss Applebottom disappeared into the cupboards. She clanged and banged and returned with every type of pot and pan that a kid could ever imagine.

“Peeling is step one to a good pie recipe.
Suzy, Mary, Lindsay, can you please help me?”

Miss Applebottom pulled out a giant sack of flour, a bucket full of sugar, eggs, and butter.

“Boys, you better get to mixing.
We’ll start the crust and all the fixings.”

Soon the room was bustling. Apples filled every corner of the room. Apple peels covered the floor. Miss Applebottom’s red hair was covered in white flour.

“That’s it, that’s it. We’re doing great!
A scrumptious pie, I just can’t wait!

Miss Applebottom and the kids coated every pan with butter. Then they lined each pan with dough. Next it was time to add the apple filling.

“Ok, kids. Heave-ho, heave-ho.
Into the pan the apple filling will go!”

Next each pie was covered with crust. But sliding all of those pies into the oven wasn’t so easy. Miss Applebottom had to call two janitors, the principal, and the bus driver, too.

“Now all we do is wait and wait.
It will be ready when the minute hand hits eight.”

So they waited, and waited. Soon the smell of fresh apple pie filled the room. It wafted down the hallways and filled every classroom.

The entire school followed the smell to the cafeteria where Miss Applebottom and her class sat.

Soon the timer went off.

“Hurray! Hurray! What a treat!
The pies are done! Everyone, let’s eat.”

Miss Applebottom, the two janitors, the principal, and the bus driver pulled the warm pies out of the oven.

Everyone grabbed a plate and a fork. They chowed down. It was the sweetest, tastiest apple pie they had ever eaten.

The students loved Miss Applebottom’s apple pie. They ate every last bite. They washed it down with a big glass of apple juice.

“Isn’t it wonderful? Isn’t it grand?
Thank you, everyone, for the helping hand.”

The students still bring Miss Applebottom an apple every day. But they make sure that the pile of apples stays small.

At the end of every week,
the class makes a new kind of apple treat.

“Now what could ever be more sweet?”
